  2. A web browser - Firefox and Google Chrome (for Windows users)is recommended however Internet Explorer (Version 7 up) does work with limited success
  3. You will need to download and install the application called VLC on your computer Click here
  4. Make sure your DM box is connected to your local area network (LAN). Most important
  5. Make sure your PC is connected to your local area network by cable or wifi. Most important

Howto do it

  1. You need to know the IP address of your DM Box. Most important
  2. Open your web browser to the IP address of your DM box.

In this example below we will use the IP address of 192.168.1.201 and this world wide web site in your DM box will appear.

Now we have there (3) options for streaming from your DM box back to your PC or other device.
  1. Web-X-TV the most common way of doing it, this uses the Zapstream application which is part of our PLi® image that you are using. This is why PLi® images stream over the local network so well.
  2. Vpid - the old way of doing back to a VLC client on your PC
  3. VLC - directly addressing Zapstream on your DM box, which also follows the channels selected on the DM box and no web browser required.

Option 1 - Web-X-TV

From the web interface (also called webif) above simply by clicking on the Web-X-TV link and then it will start playing in your web browser as shown in the example below. You can also change bouquets and channels from here.

Option 2 - Vpid / all VLC 0.8.x versions

Option 3 - Zapstream with all VLC 0.8.x versions

You do not need a web browser to take advantage of this PLi® feature. To many this is a plus (not having to use a web browser), and I for one use it to play music from DM box on my desktop when I am in the office. Who needs MP3's when there is so much great satellite radio out there (just my personal comment).

Open VLC on your desk top
PLi

Now select the Network option as shown below

PLi

Now input the details as shown below. PLi

You will now see VLC playing the video and audio stream from your DM box. Remember when you change channel on your DM box the stream will also change for you automatically.

Howto stream HDTV from my DM box to my computer

For E1 boxes / non HDTV boxes

If you can do the streaming as shown above then this should be very straight forward, BUT your LAN has to be setup properly. Here is a real example off a DM500 on the Measat 3 C Band satellite (in Asia) of the Nat Geo HD channel. Works allot better off the DM7020 though.

PLi

Tip: Click here to learn more about the PLi® Movieplayer - where you could save the HDTV stream to your media directory as a file and then watch HDTV on any DM box.

Follow these simple steps.
  1. Open the vlc application on your computer
  2. Open a network stream to http://ipofyourdreambox:31344
  3. Click settings
  4. Click on file and save the HDTV stream to your media drive i.e HDTV.avi
  5. Click Dump raw input
  6. Open Movieplayer as normal
  7. Select the file name you saved HDTV.avi and press the OK button to watch it

PLi

Now sit back and watch HDTV on your DM500 - This works very very well on the DM7020, and it works on the DM500 as shown above, but mileage may vary.

TIP: Remember while you are doing this, the file you saved is eating up your hard disk space.
NOTE: HD-TV is often broadcasted in DVB-S2. You can NOT watch channels on a DVB-S2 transponder this way as the DM7020, DM7000, DM600PVR, DM500+, DM500, DM5620 and DM5600 don not have a DVB-S2 tuner. You can watch HD-TV on DVB-S transponders, but those are becoming rare.

How to stream my DM box to my computer (All DM models - MAC or Linux Version)

Users of both the MAC and Linux boxes, can use the VLC applications as shown above if you want to. Here we will look at other ways of doing it, mainly using an application called "Mplayer" which comes as standard on both distro's (MAC and most flavours of Linux).

This mini howto assumes;
If you are using OSX then try this from terminal (bash) Click here to learn more and download
mplayer -ac mad http://192.168.1.100:31344

Or if you use Unix/linux with say KDE try this from shell
mplayer -ac mad -ao sdl http://192.168.1.100:31344

When you don't use zapstream you'll have to obtain the url to the current service through video.m3u
mplayer -ac mad "$(wget -q -O - http://root:dreambox@192.168.1.100/video.m3u)"

Make sure you change the example IP address 192.168.1.100 to the IP address of your DM box. However each time you zap / change channel, you will want to run this setup again. Mplayer doesn't support zaps like VLC does.

Support the PLi® team and get a cup of coffee.
