Hi!
Today I flashed a Vu+ Duo with the latest image (20130113) and wanted to change root password with command "passwd root" on telnet.
After I put and confirm the new password, I get out of the console and relogin to confirm the new pass, and I get into the box again without password!!
Is there a bug in latest firmware??

did you restore the /etc/passwd file from an old (2.x) backup?
we're using shadowed passwords in 3.0, so please make sure the root password field in /etc/passwd has en 'x' in the password field:
root:x:0:0:root:/home/root:/bin/sh
if that is the case, the passwd command should use the shadow file, and all should be fine.
EDIT: 'x' instead of empty password field

Hi!
I didn't use any backuped files from an older image. I flashed the latest OpenPli and configured all from scratch.
I tried the command "passwd" (without root). It asks me again about the new pass and the confirmation. After typing all in, it tells me that password was changed, but it still doesn't work.
I took a look at the file /etc/passwd and I can see the "x" instead the empty password field, except for root!! For root there is nothing typed in ("::").
What am I doing wrong??

Hello,
I edited the first row on passwd file. I think I messed it up, then I re-typed it copying it from another box:
root:x:0:0:root:/home/root:/bin/sh
Still can't logon as root. Also used a plugin "setpassword" to change the root password, but it does not work even if you change the password there.

I used a plugin called john ripper password/cracker for enigma 2, and it cleared the root password. Then entered a new one through telnet.
Still I can not access the openwebif interface. It asks for a password which is not one of the one I have used previously.
Strangely even if I disable http authentication it still ask for the password. Or maybe I need to restart enigma for the change to take effect.

Try to clear your browser history!
nah, things are not that simple in my case.
Restarted the box at night. Found out that I have no root password I set yesterday now, it simply logon with root username.
I set up a password with telnet, but it does not remember it. I can logon with username only

As things got messed up, I did an image restore. The box failed to start the first time but I kept cool and just re-flashed it again. Now its ok.
I understood that with my current configuration I can log one by telnet with one password (I used a shorter one with 4 words) and for ssh I have to use another password (longer) which I should have set previously as I think I wanted to give access to the box to someone. Moral of the story - I better leave things as they are now
